Former Liverpool midfielder Stevenson died at the age of 85. He played for Sweet
Former Liverpool midfielder Willie Stevenson died recently at the age of 85, and Liverpool's official website expressed condolences.
Stevenson made 241 appearances for Liverpool in the 1960s. As a skilled left-back, Edinburgh-born Stevenson was signed from the Glasgow Rangers by Bill Shankley in October 1962. He is a core member of Liverpool's first League One championship in 1964 and 1966 and the Reds' first FA Cup championship in 1965.
In Anfield's first four full seasons, he missed only nine league games and finished second in the 1966 European Cup of Winners.
Stevenson scored 18 goals for Liverpool, including a penalty kick that secured the victory in the semifinals of Chelsea in the historic FA Cup 1965 victory.
Stevenson transferred to Stoke City in December 1967, and before retirement he also played for the Tranmill Wanderers, Vancouver White Hats, Limerick and McClellsfield Town.
