This tradition originated from the Hatokuji Temple several miles away from Edo (now Tokyo). One day, a group of warriors were on their way back to their main house and saw a cat waving his claws to them by the side of the road. The warriors were curious and thought this might be some kind of sign, so they followed it to the temple. The monks in the temple waited for the tea ceremony, preached to them, and advised them to stay and rest.

The master of the main household was deeply moved when he heard about this. Later, after he became the temple master, he also built the ancestral temple there.
